Papers, 1629-1866.

The collection consists of correspondence, deeds and other records of land transfer, surveyor's plans, bills, receipts, and a diary. The main part of the collection is the papers of Joseph Peirce (1745-1828) and his son Joseph Hardy Peirce (1773-1832) who were agents of the Twenty Associates Land Company (officially called the Twenty Associates of the Lincolnshire Company) disposing of 100,000 acres of land in Maine centered on Camden and Hope. These records start with a grant in 1629, the founding of the Company in 1719, and chiefly between 1791 and 1832 when the Company was actively selling land. Another part contains the papers of Henry Augustus Peirce (1808-1885), son of Joseph Hardy Peirce, who was a trader in the Pacific, diplomat, and had dealing with a cotton plantation in Mississippi in 1866.
